Dame Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor (February 27, 1932 – March 23, 2011)
Elizabeth Taylor began acting when she was just eleven years old and continued to be a striking presence on-screen well into prime of her life. Much will be written in the next few hours about Ms. Taylor’s acting accomplishments, but for me, her biggest and most indelible mark will be her contribution to AIDS awareness. After losing dear friend Rock Hudson to the disease in 1985, Elizabeth Taylor was one of the first and the biggest star to come out to help raise funds for the disease, during a time when it was still considered “just a gay disease” by most in America. With organizations like amFAR and her own AIDS foundation, it is estimated Elizabeth Taylor raised $50 million dollars to help fight the disease over the past twenty-five years. It is this legacy that should never be forgotten.
